DEBTS ERASED: GRATITUDE LEADING TO FORGIVENESS

"And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors." - Matthew 6:12

This verse in the prayer taught by Jesus highlights our greatest need: the forgiveness of sins, along with a condition for receiving it - forgiving others.
Sin is a debt to God, one we have never been able to pay and never will. It remains recorded in God's book; no one else can settle it, and time cannot erase this debt.
The debt of those who are forgiven has been paid by Jesus; the bond is destroyed.
Gratitude to God should naturally lead us to forgive others.
It becomes easier to forgive when we remember whose children we are, whose disciples we are, and how insignificant the debts owed to us are in comparison to our enormous debt to the Lord.
Forgiveness of sins results from God's mercy, something we did not deserve but received nonetheless.
